My practice has developed over a 25 year time span, starting with the 1970s in the community mental health system here in Memphis. I began to study herbal medicine seriously in 1989, and have studied all over the U.S. with a variety of teachers. I attended the Southwest School of Botanical Medicine in 1999 where I was mentored by the late Michael Moore, generally acknowledged to be the grandfather of the American herbal renaissance. In 2004, I applied for and received professional status with the American Herbalist Guild, a credential given to those individuals who are considered to have mastered the art and science of herbal medicine. The requirements for professional membership are: documentation of 1200 hours of study in botanical medicine, proof of 400 hours of clinical experience, letters of recommendation from 3 health professionals, and to pass a peer-reviewed comprehensive exam.
